Dr. Hermogenes P. Villareal was awarded the title of Master of the International College of Dentists (MICD), a worldwide organization of dentists during the ICD International Council meeting held in Mexico in October 2012. He is the 10th Master Fellow of the Philippine Section since it attained its autonomy in 1966. It is a distinction granted to Fellows who have rendered conspicuous service to their Section and College, and stand out through their personal integrity and eminence in their work. Candidates are nominated by the Sections and approved by the International Council.
From a Special Report from the College at Large to further understand the recognition, Master Fellowship is rarely awarded. It is one of ICD’s highest recognitions. The ICD by-laws are clear that this distinction is for “extraordinarily conspicuous and outstanding service.” A record of service to the International College of Dentists must be demonstrated. While service to the dental profession or one’s community is necessary and valued, the ICD Bylaws insist that this award is to be reserved for those who have given much for the good of the college.
Master Fellows are scheduled for approval by the International Council during its Annual Meeting. Sections must plan carefully to submit nominations and receive the desired approval in a timely manner if they wish to confer the honor during a scheduled meeting of their own. A nomination for master fellowship follows a two-step process. Nominations from the College should be followed by an official letter from the Section to the Secretary General of the College that describes the candidate and the reasons for making the nomination. Also required are the curriculum vitae, resume or other factual record of the individual’s qualification. Approved certificates of Master Fellowship will be prepared by the College at Large Central Office, signed by the President and Secretary General, and will be delivered to the sponsoring section. The Council will not approve requests that are not in order or candidates who do not qualify. Recognizing service is ICD’s motto and such recognition is a deserving honor given to Master Fellow Hermogenes P. Villareal.
